What is Liberland?
Liberland is a country founded on April 13, 2015. Its official name is the Free Republic of Liberland and is constituted on just 7 square kilometers. There are no official figures on the population, but they have a flag, a coat of arms, a hymn and even a provisional government.
Where is Liberland located? How did they get the land?
Liberland is located between Croatia and Serbia, on the western margin of the Danube River. The exact location can be located in Google Maps at coordinates 45 ° 46 ‘N, 18 ° 52’ E. Who is behind all this?
Vít Jedlička is a renowned libertarian Czech political activist opposed to all types of state interventionism. In his native Czech Republic, the 31-year-old politician is part of the Free Citizens Party, a right-wing party formed some years ago.
The basic slogan of the foundation of Liberland is that citizens are completely free of any type of state intervention that limits their liberties. There are no public services, taxes are the minimum necessary to maintain the administrative functioning of the State and each one is totally free with regard to his or her orientation, religion and philosophical ideas. However, citizens with a Nazi, communist or extremist background of any kind are not allowed.
Is it a real country?
What is a “real” country? Actually it is very difficult to say. The lands belonged to no one, nobody really cared what was happening there. Now a group of people took it as their own and formed a state that already has identity symbols, a territory, a government and a Constitution. Of course, the population is lacking, something essential for a country to make sense, right? They also do not have a police or military force.

You can apply for Liberland citizenship by filling out the citizenship form available on their official website. According to Liberland’s own national definition, people who have respect for others and their opinions regardless of their race, ethnicity, orientation or religion are needed. Also people who respect private property and people who do not have any kind of criminal or political-extremist background.
