For every 100 people who call 911, 66 will wait more than 5 minutes for a response. 36.4 will wait more than 10 minutes. In poor neighborhoods, in minority neighborhoods, in neighborhoods with high crime, the wait times can be even longer.
This is a problem, because the average assault only takes 90 seconds. Even burglaries only last an average of 10 minutes. That means that if you call 911, police probably aren’t going to arrive until after the crime is over.
And the problems with relying on a State monopoly go beyond long wait times. Stories of police abuse and even fabrication of evidence are sadly common. Stories of people calling 911 for help, and ending up being ticketed for selling raw milk or grilling in the wrong place, are recorded every day.
This isn’t to say that all police officers are bad people. They’re not. But 911 is like any other state-enforced monopoly, from Soviet food production to currency creation. Each of these programs did produce some good. But they were also inefficient, slow, and suffered from abuse.
